Independent Frames and Trusses has been a trusted name in residential and light commercial framing and trusses in New Zealand for close to 30 years.
Based in Takanini, Auckland for the past eight years, the company has built a reputation for quality and reliability, delivering finished framing and trusses for the construction of everything from homes to schools, offices, and warehouses.
Like many businesses in the industry, Independent Frames and Trusses faced the challenge of keeping up with growing demand while managing labour costs and maintaining high standards of quality. Up until 2021, the company had been steadily growing, but the last few years have been particularly tough. Owner James Murphy knew that to stay competitive and prepare for future growth, investing in automation was the right move.

Making the Move to Automation
For James, moving from a manual framing process to an automated wall line was a matter of “when” rather than “if.” The key question was which solution to choose. Having come from a background at Fletchers, James knew the importance of selecting equipment that was reliable, local, and well-supported.
“Spida seemed to be a prominent solution in New Zealand,” he explains. “There wasn’t much second-hand gear around, and having a local team for support and servicing was a huge factor. We wanted a partner we could rely on long term.”

The Spida Difference
Since installing the automated wall line, Independent Frames and Trusses has seen a significant improvement in productivity. Previously, two teams of three could push out 12 cubic metres of wall panels a day. Now, one team of five can consistently achieve 16 cubic metres - and the team can push towards 20 when needed, with fewer people on the floor.
“The efficiencies are clear. We’re less reliant on individual skillsets, and training new staff is much easier. The consistency in quality is fantastic - rarely do we have a framing issue, and builders notice the difference immediately.”
The team has also embraced the safety and ergonomic benefits. The automated system reduces manual handling and repetitive strain, while conveyors are easier to manage, helping protect the team’s backs and overall wellbeing.

Future-Proofing the Factory
James credits Spida for more than just machinery: the company also helped optimise the factory layout, ensuring the workspace is efficient and scalable. “If we want to add another line or other machines in the future, we’ve got room. It’s really future-proofed,” he says.

Support That Matters
Ongoing service and maintenance have been key to keeping the line running smoothly. “We’re big on routine servicing,” James notes. “We’ve had very few problems, and the support has been excellent. It’s been a good investment, and we’re ready to ramp up production when the market picks up.”
Delivering Independent Value
Independence is central to the company’s ethos. Not tied to any single customer or merchant, Independent Frames and Trusses maintains the freedom to prioritise quality and service for its diverse client base. With the Spida wall line, James and his team can continue to uphold this promise while increasing output and efficiency.
“Investing in automation was the right decision. We’re producing more, safer, and better-quality frames, and it positions us perfectly for growth in the years ahead.”
